UPVC and Composite doors are excellent choices to secure your home, however like all doors they do have their vulnerabilities. UPVC and Composite doors usually have a letter hole fitted. Letter holes can be used to gain access to your home by pulling down the handle from the inside, a technique called fishing. However this can be simply overcome by locking your doors with the key. This is known as double locking making the handle stiff and unable to turn and thus open.
Wooden doors have a number of inherited vulnerabilities which should be addressed. The first is by bypassing the lock. Wooden doors typically have two locks, the first is a rim lock attached to a latch on the inside of the door. The second is a 5 lever deadlock. People don’t usually lock both locks as they presume the top lock which is the rim lock, locks automatically. This is incorrect most of the time the lock is just on a latch and can be opened with very little know how and very simply with a piece of equipment which costs less than £5. However this can easily be overcome by simply locking your deadlock, deadlocks are one of the most secure locks domestically available.
Another vulnerability of wooden doors is their vulnerability to forceful attacks. Forceful attacks involving using brute force to smash through or down a door. London and Birmingham bars are useful security accessories that will strengthen your door frame making the door much more force resistant and able to deal with brute force attacks.
Burglars tend to target homes which are unoccupied as there is far less chance to be caught. Logic would suggest by making your home at least appearing to look occupied would reduce the chances of a break in. You can do this with plug timers, these can turn lights, radios, TV’s and other appliances on and off at a time of your choosing. Most burglaries happen between the hours of 10:00am and 3:00pm as most people are at work or in the early hours of the morning 1:00am – 4:00am.
Criminals often target gardens, sheds and garages. You should ensure your garden is clean of rubbish and any valuable goods are kept secured in the home, garage or shed. To help ensure your garage and shed remain protected we highly recommend a stand alone alarm which will activate based on movement, emitting a high decibel ring. Ensure your garage has a garage protector on the door and your shed with a heavy duty padlock, it is also a good idea to cover any windows preventing opportunistic criminals from seeing their contents.
